Cots 4 Tots – A Charity That Helps Families With Neonatal Intensive Care
Cots for Tots provides a place to stay near the hospital to families with babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The Great Appeal, the charity dedicated to Bristol Children’s Hospital, runs the program. Abbey Silvester ran in support of the AJ Bell Great Bristol Run.

The Cots 4 Tots story
The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a non-profit foundation which supports the Marine Corps’ annual toy drive. It offers administrative, financial logistical, and promotional support for local Toys for Tots coordinators, in addition to a variety of services that the Marine Corps is unable to provide. It also provides educational and informational materials to the general public and arranges for national corporations to incorporate information about Toys for Tots into their paid advertisements, and runs an annual public education program and public relations.
The Cots 4 Tots story began in 2010 with a fundraising appeal for Bristol’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located at St Michael’s Hospital. The charity has raised tens of thousands of pounds since its inception, helping families with sick or premature babies throughout the West of England and South Wales. Its work includes providing accommodation for families in houses and providing state-of-the-art equipment for the NICU.
Cots for Tots House is an “home away from home” for families who are in hospital. It is located right next to the NICU and allows parents to be close to their baby. The charity has helped over 2,100 families stay in the house since 2012.
Families staying at Cots For Tots House are reassured they are not on their own. They can discuss their experiences with other parents experiencing the exact issue. Additionally, they have access to a wide range of facilities to make their stay as comfortable as is possible.
The charity also provides a music therapist who visits the NICU to ease the stress and pain levels of babies and their parents. This has been proven to improve the quality of life of both the parents and patients. Music therapy also helps reduce the amount of medications needed to treat these children, saving money and time for the hospitals. The therapist employs specially-designed resonant devices that are tuned to specific frequencies and play soothing tunes for infants. The resonant musical instruments also help relax fathers and mothers.

Abbey Silvester’s two children Alfie and Mollie spent time at St Michael’s Hospital’s neonatal intensive unit. She claims Cots for Tots was “an absolute godsend” and that her family and she wouldn’t have been able to get through the day without it. “You meet new friends here, you build an atmosphere of community and bond with each other,” said she. “Without it, who can say what our lives would have looked like.”

Natasha Attwood said that the charity was “a Godsend” after she had stayed twice there while her twins were at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She continued: “You form friendships here and build a sense of community. You also learn to respect each others.” They look after the parents so that they can look after their children.”

The house, which was opened after PS1m was raised locally and allows parents to remain close to their sick babies while being able to cook, clean and take some time to relax. It also gives them the opportunity to establish friendships with other families in similar situations and help each other.
The charity has a special connection to Natasha Attwood, who stayed in the house with both her son Cobie and daughter Avalon. She calls it “a Godsend”. Her daughter and son are now healthy, however she still visits them frequently and is thankful to the team who took care of them.
